If you’re new to teff, or looking for more tips to maximize your product’s lifespan, keep reading!
Teff flour and grain are both exceptionally resilient, maintaining their freshness for up to two years when stored correctly. So what’s the best way to keep them fresh?
Storing Teff Flour

Teff flour is milled fresh daily at our packaging facility. As with most flours, teff flour is best used as close to possible from the milling date. However, if you’re looking to extend its life you can store it in the freezer. The cold temperatures of the freezer slows down the oxidation of the oils in the teff. If your teff flour smells bad, it is likely rancid and should be disposed.
It is important to ensure that your teff flour is stored in a cool, dark, dry place in a sealed, airtight container. This ensures that pests can’t get in, and maintains freshness for as long as possible. Teff flour should be consumed before the best by date listed on your packages.
Storing Teff Grain
Whole grains, like teff, contain healthy oils that are effected by heat, light, and moisture. Similarly to teff flour, teff grain can also be stored in the freezer to slow the oxidation of the oils.
Teff grain should be stored in a cool, dark, dry place in a sealed, airtight container. This ensures that pests can’t get in, and maintains freshness for as long as possible. Remember that aside from pests, heat, air, and moisture are what often cause whole grains to spoil.

Storage tips by packaging type:
14oz Bags
Our 14oz bags of teff flour and grain are conveniently resealable. As with all teff products, place the package in a cool, dry, dark place. Your resealable bag can act as your sealed, airtight container, or you may transfer to another container for storage.
25lb Bags
Our 25lb bags of teff flour and grain are packaged in recyclable paper bags. Keep in mind that the paper bags are not resealable, and your teff should be transferred to another container for storage. Here is a link to a storage container that would fit your entire 25lb bag of teff. Remember that all teff should be stored in a cool, dark, dry place.
Pallets
If you’re receiving an entire pallet of teff, thank you! You must love teff as much as we do. Remember that teff does best when it is stored in a cool, dark, dry place. Store your bags off the floor and away from pests, moisture, and any other contaminants.

Pests love teff, too!
When storing in our paper 25lb. bags, it is highly recommended to use your teff products promptly to avoid pest issues. We do not recommend storing your teff in areas that are known to have rodents, insects, or excessive moisture (garage, storage units, etc.). Warm seasons are more prone to insect activity; we do not recommend storing large amounts of teff at room temperature during summer months. Teff should not be stored on the ground, avoiding pests and spills.
