About The Teff Plant
Teff is a summer annual grass native to Ethiopia. It's used for both forage and grain production. Being from the equatorial highlands, teff benefits from warm temperatures and bright sunlight, as well as cooler nights. We have found that teff does well in a range of environments here in the United States, and can grow well in a variety of soil types. Teff is resilient to hot temperatures and water stress, and can provide a good option for conserving water.
Planting
A good time to plant teff is when the soil is 65 degrees and the last frost has passed. Teff benefits from a firmly packed seed bed, and can be broadcast or drilled. Teff seeding rate can vary depending on the conditions. We have experience with both tilled and no-till planting.
Nutrients
Teff is efficient with nutrients and does well with small amounts of NPK. We have also seen increased yields with the application of micronutrients.
Water
Teff is an efficient water user. The exact amount of water can depend on the temperature and soil type. Teff also seems to benefit from strategic water restrictions.
Weed Control
There are a number of licensed options for weed control in teff. In organic systems, weed control is achieved by tilling.
Harvest
Teff is generally swathed and laid in windrows and subsequently combined after approximately a week.

Yield
Teff grain yields depend on a number of factors. Weed control is important, as is plant density and consistent watering. We have also seen yield bumps from by using micronutrients. A yield of 2000 lbs per acre is generally a good target, though yields as high as 3000 lbs are possible.
Agronomic Advice
The Teff Company works closely with growers to advise on the best practices for maximum yield and high quality. We have experience in several growing regions.
