*Each product is produced in accordance with good manufacturing practices and all applicable FDA regulations as amended.

Is there possible gluten contamination during the farming process?

Products

What is the shelf-life of your teff?

24 months (about 2 years) at recommended storage conditions and good sanitary practices.

What are the recommendations for storing teff?

As with any freshly milled grains, the freshness of the flour decreases soon after milling. We mill our teff fresh, package, and ship right away. To maintain freshness for up to 2 years, we recommend storing your teff flour, or grain, in a cool, dry place. Storing them in the refrigerator, or freezer, if possible.

We do not recommend storing your teff in areas that are known to have rodents, insects, excessive moisture (garage, storage units, etc).

Do you use pesticides, fungicides, and/or fumigants in any step of the growing and processing of your teff?

Maskal Teff does not allow off label usage of pesticides during the growing process nor does it allow for the usage of pesticides as desiccants, nor desiccants in general, during the harvesting process.

Pesticides are not used during storage or processing.

Fungicides and fumigants are also not used at any point while growing, harvesting, storing, or processing.

Are your teff products Kosher/

Yes, our certification is granted by OK Kosher after thorough inspection and approval of our production processes and ingredients used in the food production. Our certification is done annually.

Are your teff products Non-GMO?

Our products are non-GMO Project Verified.

“This is an exciting and important day for us. Having the Non-GMO Project Verification validates the great care and effort that we’ve put into producing the best quality teff on the market. It’s an additional way of affirming to our customers the quality and integrity of our Maskal Teff products. We have always believed in integrity of source, supply chain and quality, which is why we have always supplied our own teff seed to our farmers. Having the Non-GMO Project Verification affords our customers the independent confirmation of the integrity of the foods they are eating.”

Do you use glyphosate (Round-Up) in the growing or processing of your teff?

We do not use products containing or derived from glyphosate in the growing or processing of any of our products.

Round-Up kills teff.

What ingredients are in your teff product?

Our products are 100% whole grain teff.

There are no additives or preservatives used at any time in the growing or milling of teff.

What types/amount of fertilizers are used on the fields when growing your teff?

Fertilizers used by our farmers vary based on a variety of factors including soil composition, crop rotation, and other practices such as cover cropping.

Standard fertilizers are applied, such as: nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and small amounts of micronutrients.

Teff typically requires less fertilizer than common commodity crops.

What crops are also grown in the same fields/farms that teff is grown?

Our farmers grow a variety of crops including but not limited to: Potatoes, alfalfa, wheat, barley, beets, onions, beans, and corn.

Is your teff herbicide/pesticide free?

Rather than utilizing pesticides to control for insects, an integrated pest management program is used. Currently, some of our conventionally grown teff is sprayed in the early weeks of growth with an herbicide to facilitate control of weeds. Additionally, our contract with farmers specifically prohibits the use of desiccants (e.g. Roundup/glyphosate) for drying the crop down.

What is the difference between brown and ivory teff?

The only difference between brown and ivory teff is their flavor profile. Brown has a more nutty flavor. Ivory has a sweet, mild flavor.

Both ivory and brown teff are whole grain and remain whole grains throughout the milling process.

NEITHER ivory nor brown is refined.

Organic Teff

What is organic teff?

Our organic teff is certified organic by the standards of the State of California and the State of Idaho. Practically speaking, this certification means that the teff is grown on certified organic land. At no time are certain agricultural chemicals or fertilizers allowed on this land, including but not limited to the time the teff is grown. There are crop applications that are allowed under the organic certification. One example is that fields may be fertilized using manure.
