The Teff Seed

A Tiny Seed From Long Ago

Despite being one of the smallest seeds in the world (about the size of a poppy seed), teff is considered a superfood grain, packed with nutrition. Teff is also an ancient grain that has been cultivated for thousands of years

How Maskal Teff Uses Teff Seed

At Maskal Teff, we grow a few varieties of teff that have been developed for both their agricultural and culinary traits. For farming, things like the yield and time to harvest are very important, while people consuming the grain are interested in things like nutrition, baking qualities and taste. We select seed that will hopefully work the best for everyone.

We work with our farmers to produce all of our own seed, here in the United States. That includes our ivory and brown varieties, as well as our organic seed stock. We typically try to return seed to the region where it was grown.

How Teff is Grown and Seeds are Harvested

Teff is grown primarily in well-drained soils and is adaptable regions with reduced water availability, making it a sustainable crop choice for farmers. The seeds are either drilled or broadcast onto a firm seed bed. The teff grows quickly and is harvested after 100-120 days using a combine. The best seeds are segregated for the next years production.

Teff Seed for Teff forage or Teff grain

Maskal Teff maintains several varieties of teff seed. We have several culinary varieties that satisfy the culinary demands or our customers. They are for grain production. We also maintain several forage varieties, for growing teff grass, though currently we are not offering those for sale.
